LMC staff working overtime during elections period

The outstanding performance of the Liberia Media Center during the just-ended presidential and legislative elections is being continuously heralded locally and internationally, with the News Newspaper selecting the LMC as its “Media Institution of the Year”.

According to the independent News newspaper, LMC's selection as Media Institution of the Year was based on the fact that the institution “has not only facilitated media development in Liberia, but has also served as a pivotal watchdog for media practitioners dedicated to inform, educate and entertain the public through mass media outlets”

Founded 2005 as a direct partner to the Press Union of Liberia, the center is now the largest Liberian non-governmental organization engaged in media empowerment.

The center has trained more than 500 journalists and provided basic equipment to media institutions and community radio stations throughout the country.

Besides, the LMC regularly monitors and publishes reports on the coverage of media institutions in Liberia with the view of encouraging professional standards within the Liberian media, and also promotes public discourse on divergent critical issues.

To the best of our assessment, the LMC is the only media institution involved in this enterprise in which it monitors and reports on the pitfalls, challenges and successes of the media.

The editorial staff of The NEWS also realized the role the LMC performed during the elections by providing initial results of the 2011 presidential and general elections. Indeed, this significant contribution served as a necessary cushion, allaying anxieties during the vote counting process.
